Alumina (Al2O3) Ceramics
Alumina (aluminum oxide) has a very high melting point of 2,072 °C and is very hard. Alumina ceramics are the most common technical material and are the more traditional ceramics. High-purity alumina has excellent electrical insulation, high chemical resistance, and low thermal expansion properties. They are used to make parts for CVD, ion implantation, lithography, and semiconductors. Alumina tubes are used in industrial furnaces and thermocouple protectors. Alumina ceramics have traditionally been ideal for products such as injection tubes, gas nozzles, and insulators. The high hardness makes alumina an ideal material for grinding, and grinding media. Alumina mortars and pestles are widely used for laboratory grinding.
