Hot Pressed Boron Nitride (HBN) Description
Hot-pressed boron nitride (HBN) has a hardness of about 4 and is an advanced solid ceramic material. It is made by sintering boron nitride powder together into a solid material. As a machinable material, HBN boron nitride can be machined into various custom shapes as long as the raw material is large enough.
Boron nitride is a heat and chemical-resistant boron and nitrogen compound with the chemical formula BN. It is an advanced ceramic material available in both solid and powder forms.
There are several crystal forms of BN. The hexagonal counterpart to graphite is the most stable and soft form and is therefore used as a lubricant and additive in cosmetics. The diamond-like cubic (c-BN) variety has a very high hardness, second only to diamond. The rare wurtzite boron nitride (w-BN) is similar to cristobalite and may even be harder than CBN. Boron nitride is not a naturally occurring substance, it is synthesized.
