Lanthanum Hexaboride (LaB6) Ceramics
Lanthanum boride, also known as lanthanum hexaboride or LaB6, is an inorganic chemical, a boride of lanthanum, and a refractory ceramic material. Stable in vacuum environment; its melting point is as high as 2210 °C. Insoluble in water and hydrochloric acid.
 
Properties of lanthanum hexaboride:
-High melting point of 2528 K
-Insoluble in water and hydrochloric acid
-High electron emission rate
-Stable in vacuum
-Stoichiometric samples have a deep purple-purple color, while boron-rich samples (above LaB6.07) have a blue color. Ion bombardment changes its color from purple to emerald green, and LaB6 is a superconductor with a relatively low transition temperature of 0.45 K. LaB6 is considered a boron-rich material.
 
Boron compounds are hard, high-melting substances with metal-like conductivity that are stable to non-oxidizing acids but decompose in strong oxidizing agents and strong bases. Borides are used in semiconductors, superconductors, diamagnetic, paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, turbine blades, and rocket nozzles.
 
Lanthanum boride application
The main application of LaB6 is in hot cathodes, as a single crystal, or as a coating deposited by physical vapor deposition. Its applications include:
