Pyrolytic boron nitride discs and other pyrolytic boron nitride products are synthesized on molds through a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process using BCl3 and NH3 at high temperatures and low pressures. PBN products have extremely high purity, and the purity of gas raw materials is easier to control. Typically, PBN products have total impurities <100 ppm, which means the purity is no less than 99.99%.

Due to its high density and purity, PBN is becoming a widely used material in vacuum processes. The CVD process gives this pyrolytic boron nitride a near-perfect layered structure, resulting in anisotropic thermal conductivity, making it an ideal material for manufacturing furnace and vacuum system components.

Due to the CVD process, the thickness of PBN products is usually <5mm. The pyrolytic boron nitride wafers available from Edgetech are cut into 1mm, 2mm, or 3mm thick PBN wafers with a diameter of approximately 10~14 inches. The size of the raw PBN blank is limited by the equipment, but highly customized finished shapes can be obtained from it at a competitive cost.
