Silicon carbide (SiC), also known as silicon carbide, is a ceramic-like compound formed by bonding silicon and carbon. Since the end of the 19th century, silicon carbide has become an important material for sandpaper, grinding wheels, and cutting tools. More recently, it has found applications in refractory linings and heating elements for industrial furnaces, wear parts for pumps and rocket engines, and semiconductor substrates for light-emitting diodes.
