Hafnium is a chemical element with the symbol Hf and atomic number 72.

Hafnium is a shiny, silvery, malleable metal that is corrosion-resistant and chemically similar to zirconium.

Hafnium is used for filaments and electrodes. Some semiconductor fabrication processes use their oxides for integrated circuits with feature lengths of 45 nanometers and smaller. Some superalloys for special applications contain hafnium as well as niobium, titanium or tungsten. Hafnium’s large neutron capture cross-section makes it a good material for neutron-absorbing control rods in nuclear power plants but requires removal from the neutron-permeable, corrosion-resistant zirconium alloys used in nuclear reactors.
