Hyaluronic acid is abbreviated as HA; conjugated hyaluronate, also known as hyaluronan, is an anionic, non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan that is widely distributed in connective tissue, epithelial tissue and nervous tissue. It is unique among glycosaminoglycans in that it is non-sulfated, forms in the plasma membrane rather than the Golgi apparatus, and can be very large: human synovial HA averages about 7 million Da per molecule, or about 20,000 disaccharide monomer, while other sources mention 3-4 million daltons.

Hyaluronic acid is an important component of articular cartilage and is present as a coating around each cell (chondrocyte).

As a major component of the extracellular matrix, hyaluronic acid plays a key role in tissue regeneration, inflammatory responses, and angiogenesis (the wound repair phase).

HA plays an important role in normal epidermis. Due to its diverse properties, HA also has crucial functions during epithelial regeneration. These include components of the extracellular matrix as basal keratinocytes, the major component of the epidermis; their free radical scavenging functions and their role in keratinocyte proliferation and migration.

Hyaluronic acid is FDA-approved for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis via intra-articular injection.
