Indium

Indium is a chemical element with the symbol In and atomic number 49.

Indium is the softest non-alkali metal. It is a silvery-white metal that resembles tin in appearance. Indium is a highly ductile late transition metal with a bright luster. It is very soft (1.2 on the Mohs scale) and can be cut with a knife like sodium.

Indium is most prominent in the semiconductor industry, in the production of low-melting metal alloys such as solder, high-vacuum seals on soft metals, and indium tin oxide (ITO) transparent conductive coatings on glass. Indium is considered a technologically critical element.

Indium has many semiconductor-related applications. Some indium compounds, such as indium antimonide and indium phosphide, are semiconductors with useful properties: a precursor is usually trimethylindium (TMI), which is also used as a semiconductor dopant in II-VI compound semiconductors. Indium wire is used as a vacuum seal and thermal conductor in cryogenic and ultra-high vacuum applications, and as a gasket deformed to fill gaps in manufacturing applications. Indium is one of many substitutes for mercury in alkaline batteries, preventing zinc from corroding and releasing hydrogen gas.
