Niobium is not as corrosion resistant as tantalum at high temperatures. Niobium is not attacked by nitric acid up to 100°C, but is strongly attacked by a mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid. Hot concentrated hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and phosphoric acid will attack niobium, but hot concentrated nitric acid will not attack it. Most acids will not attack niobium at room temperature. It is attacked to some extent by alkaline solutions at all temperatures. Niobium is used in the nuclear industry because of its low capture cross section for thermal neutrons. Niobium can be electrically heated and anodized to a variety of colors, which makes it very attractive in the jewelry industry.
Niobium rings can be cut from plates, rods and tubes. Some open niobium rings can also be made by rolling small diameter rods.
