Application of cerium

Cerium has many applications. For example, cerium(III) oxide is used as a catalyst to oxidize CO emissions from motor vehicles, while cerium(IV) oxide is used for the precision polishing of optical components. Cerium compounds are also used in the production of glass. Cerium can also be added to aluminum, iron, and magnesium alloys to enhance their properties.

Chemical oxidizers, polishing powders, yellow pigments in glass and ceramics, self-cleaning furnace catalysts, fluid catalytic cracking catalysts in oil refineries, and cerium-iron flint for lighters. Cerium is commonly used in pyrophoric cerium-iron alloys for making flint. It is also a component of the carbon electrodes of arc lamps used in the sports industry.

Mischmetal Application & Usage
Mischmetal is widely used in the iron and steel foundry industry to make FeSiMg alloys and to remove free oxygen and sulfur by forming stable oxysulfides and binding unwanted trace elements such as lead and antimony. Mixed rare earth can be further processed into ingots of various shapes.

Cerium Boride (CeB6)

Cerium boride, or cerium hexaboride or CeB6, is a refractory ceramic material. The main application of cerium hexaboride is a hot cathode coating or hot cathode made of cerium hexaboride crystal. It usually works at a temperature of 1450°C.

Cerium hexaboride, like lanthanum hexaboride, evaporates slowly during cathode operation. CeB6 positive electrode under 1850 K working condition, CeB6 should maintain the optimal shape for a longer time, so the service life is longer. Although the process is 30% slower than lanthanum boride, cerium boride deposits are reported to be more challenging to remove.
