It is a silvery-white metal that is resistant to corrosion in dry air, but not in humid air. Lutetium is the last element of the lanthanide series and is traditionally classified as a rare earth element

Lutetium, the last rare earth element, has several interesting applications. Lutetium isotopes, for example, can determine the age of meteorites and are used to experimentally target tumors. Lutetium is used as a catalyst in petroleum refining and other chemical reactions. Lutetium is also used in LED bulbs. Lutetium is also used in high-index lenses, magnetic bubble storage devices, and positron emission tomography detectors.

Lutetium Oxide

Lutetium Oxide (Lu2O3), also called lutecia, is a cubic compound of lutetium. It is a lanthanide oxide, also known as a rare earth. Lutetium oxide is white and insoluble in water. Due to the nature of oxides, it does not conduct electricity. However, it produces lutetium tantalate, the densest known white material, which is often used in X-ray phosphors. It is also soluble in aqueous solutions and can be used in ceramic applications.

Lutetium fluoride (LuF3) is one of the important lutetium compounds. Lutetium compounds always contain elements in the +3 oxidation state. Most aqueous solutions of lutetium salts are colorless and form white crystalline solids on drying, with the exception of iodide. Lutetium salts such as nitrates, sulfates, and acetates are water-soluble, while lutetium oxides, hydroxides, fluorides, carbonates, phosphates, and oxalates are insoluble in water.
