Scandium (Sc) is a key ingredient in the new solid oxide fuel cell market as well as lighting and aerospace components.

Scandium’s main application is aluminum-scandium alloys (Sc-Al alloys) for small aerospace industry components. The commonly used content is 2% scandium. The addition of scandium to aluminum can limit excessive grain growth that occurs in the heat-affected zone of welded aluminum components. Another application is that scandium-aluminum alloys are used in some sports equipment, including baseball and lacrosse bats, as well as bicycle frames and related components.
