Tungsten-based composites (tungsten-copper and tungsten-silver) are high-strength refractory metal materials manufactured through a strictly controlled process that includes pressing, sintering, and infiltration of copper or silver. They have high heat resistance, arc resistance, wear resistance, and deformation resistance during high-temperature welding, flash butt welding, and spot welding. They also have excellent electrical and thermal conductivity. The properties of tungsten composites are related to the ratio of copper/silver to tungsten. If the tungsten content is increased, the arc resistance and wear resistance are improved, but the thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity are reduced. Due to their unique properties, they are widely used in applications where a combination of good electrical and/or thermal conductivity and low thermal deformation is required, such as:

The following are the specific properties and uses of each brand of tungsten-copper composite materials.

CuW50 and CuW55: These composite materials have the lowest tungsten content. They are both good switch and contact materials for oil-filled equipment. CuW55 is also used in arc-extinguishing contacts in oil circuit breakers and the arc-extinguishing edges of selectors and switching blades in transformer tap-changers.

CuW65 and CuW70, composites are used as contact materials in severe arcing applications including gas, oil, and some air circuit breakers. They are also used for arc-quenching edges on selectors and reversing switchblades. 

CuW75 and CuW80, these composites are used as contact materials under extreme arcing conditions. Applications include arc-quenching contacts in gas and oil circuit breakers, contactors and transformer tap-changers, arc-quenching plates, and arc-quenching slides in power switchgear.

CuW85 and CuW90, these composites have the highest tungsten content. They are used as contact materials where resistance to contact welding, adhesion, and arc erosion is crucial. They also provide satisfactory heat and current interruption capabilities. Typical applications include power vacuum switches and high-power spark gap electrodes.
